Village FieldIf you would like to help maintain the field, dont wait for a Working Party - you can pop up at any time. Contact Geoff if you are not sure what is best to tackle. Village Picnic 2010 - The weather was not as nice as it had been, but a good crowd turned out for a picnic in the field. Those who had worked on the field over the year were thanked by Kathleen, especially for the work on the steps. Delicious strawberries were provided courtesy of the Village Lunch fund - Lunn's first outdoor crop! I forgot my camera, so if anyone has photos they would like to share, please let me have digital copies.
Spring 2010 - Working Party -Thank you to those who helped in the field, clearing and cutting, on this day and throughout the year. The steps are looking good, making access much easier. Do spare yourself a few minutes to look at the display of primroses and other wild flowers - "What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare"
Village Picnic - On Sunday 5th July 2009 the heavens opened, and it poured down, at 12 noon, precisely the time the Village Picnic was due to start. Undeterred, as soon as the rain stopped half an hour later a band of villagers walked up to the top of the field to admire the new bench, and to enjoy their picnic. It would have been nice to see a few more folk there, but those who were able to go had a good time. Click on the bench to see the photos. Spring 2009 Working Party - why not join friends in clearing brambles and scrub any time over the Easter Holiday; bring your own tools. (Contact Geoff Brooks for details.) A group of willing workers made a very good start on Sun 5th April. Click here to see photos. The display of primroses, oxlips, and violets is wonderful - see if you can spot any other wild flowers. In 2007, an agreement was signed with Somerset County Council that the village would take over the maintenance of a field in The Combe. The field contains a number of rare wild plants, and the bank is covered in primroses in the spring. A water supply was provided, and new gates fitted, to allow planned grazing and cutting. Villagers got together to clear brambles and scrub which had become overgrown because the field had not been grazed for some time.
